CH150120PE
The delivery arrived before the expected date, excellent. The delivery was crated on a pallet and placed exactly where required by the helpful deliverer. The crate was approximately 1m metre on a side and with each panel fixed by a system I have not seen before. Numerous flanges bent around each edge of the crate. This seems very secure and easy to undo. First impressions of the contents were of the satisfying amount of solid metal. When unboxed it is immediately obvious that a significant amount of assembly is required by the end user and that two persons at least are needed. My first negative observation was an apparent tyre puncture (see pictures). The metal handle of the hopper safety catch was forced into the tyre. At that time I did not know how far this had penetrated. As it transpired although a dent was left in the side wall of the tyre it did not seem to be deflating. A week later it is still nicely inflated, so no actual puncture. Several other observations were made during unpacking, see pictures. A dent in the side wall of the hopper. The cable protection sheathing was not engaged in either of the safety switches leaving the wiring exposed. The hopper hinge plate was bent near the hinge end. This means that the hopper does not swing closed naturally. In fact I had to use a long bolt in order to fully close the hopper to the shredder. There is therefore a lot of stress on the hinges because of the leverage across the width of the plate. I am guessing that this will be a point of early failure. I did not have any available persons to help with assembly. Using a combination of jacks, levers, blocks and axle stands most of the assembly is straight forward. I enjoy doing this type of thing so it was quite fun. Putting on the wheels, tow bar and stand was easy enough. The component which hold the tow bar and which fits to the main chassis is held by four bolts with nuts. These are supplied, but the nuts are superfluous since some are already welded in place. In one of these nuts the thread was damaged and would not take a bolt until the thread had been recut and cleared with a tap. The first real difficulty I had was with the disharge chute. The manual could be clearer here about the relationship of the chute collar components. The hopper is both large and heavy and sensibly should be assembled with two persons. NOT being entirely sensible I did it myself. The two hinge pins have to be aligned with the hinge holes whilst supporting the hopper and manipulating it into position. The fitting process for this could be made a lot easier if the pins of the hopper hinge plate were of different lengths. Allowing one pin to be engage first and the second pin aligned by suitable rotation of the hopper. Being not entirely sensible and doing this on my own was difficult (read stupid). Preparing the engine itself is simple. Add oil following the instructions. Add fuel to the tank. Interestingly there is no smell of fuel from the tank before filling. Maybe the engine has never been run? Check the spark plug is fitted and we are ready to go. When running the machine give the impression of being able to cope with anything. A test with some available branches confirms the impression of being a very capable machine. At the end of the discharge chute there is a plate that can be angled to direct the output. But there is a gap between the chute and the directing plate. So a lot of material is simply sprayed into the air. Before I come up with a better fix I use some sacking draped over the latter part of the of the chute into which the chips are arrested and fall into a barrow. I have now had two sessions using this machine and I am impressed and very happy. Apart from the issue with the hinge plate, see above, it has been a positive experience. I have a large garden or small holding for which this scale of machine is suitable. Having it on hand all the time is much more convenient than hiring a similar or larger machine. Such companies seem to want to recover the cost of buying a machine in about four hirings. I can heartily recommend this shredder.
